Mogok Ruby

Mogok ruby land north of Mandalay

Mogok\s stone tract is the best ruby source for more than thousand years.
Attractive spinels and sapphire are found along with them and sometimes they lock even better because their colors are more vibrant. With them, it is similar to corundum which actually is the sapphire and ruby family.

Around Mogok gems land rubies and sapphires plus spinel and colorful peridots and topaz are common. Other semi-precious stones such as zircon and quartz inclusive amethyst plus tourmaline moonstone and plenty more are found.
selecting rubies at Mogok
This unique phenomenon occurs only in Myanmar. The mineral resources which may be considered as valuable gemstones should have the following characteristics beauty durability and rarity at Mogok ruby land.
These gemstones are beautiful because of their color clarity transparency brightness and hardness.

The red corundum (ruby) from Mogok

This is among the rarest of the major precious stones.

The second version is Sapphire which covers all other colors. Myanmar has two main ruby mining areas which are shown on the maps at the right side. There are two main mining districts, one is the Mogok stone tract where they found the crystals since centuries with the best quality and colors of “pigeon blood red". Other products from the places are sapphire, topaz, tourmaline, garnet and red spinel.

The ruby diamond rings below are from the Bogyoke Market in Yangon one of the most famous gemstone bazaar in the world.

Burma style ruby rings

Ruby's red crystals display an internal picture which is distinctly unique.  Often allowing separation from rubies of any other source. The major features are both euhedral ('well-formed') and rounded crystal grains they "go" well along with dense clouds of rutile silk. Repeated twinning is relatively common, as is hexagonal color zoning sometimes in a swirled pattern termed 'treacle'.

Generally, absent however or in small numbers only are the liquid-filled "fingerprints" and feathers which are common in Thai rubies. Crystalline solids of a number of types are characteristic in Burmese rubies. They typically form clusters of rounded and for euhedral wins of a light color or colorless) concentrated particularly in the center of the crystal. The most often reported inclusions are calcite spinel and corundum plus apatite. Futile and zircon. Calcite is present as both rounded and angular rhombs and may be recognized by its cleavage and the polysynthetic twin lamellae which it often contains.

Spinel stones are found in the same areas and look very similar that's the reason why people mistakenly often confuse them.

The stone quality of Myanmar ruby (Burma) is superior to other countries, Mogok red rubies are always discovered together with sapphires since both are corundum gems. Similar gemstones are found in other places of the globe such as Madagascar, Sri Lanka and elsewhere? It is the clarity and rich red fluorescence conditions which make the Burmese Ruby superior to all other. Additional low scale/quality mining is done in Thailand, Cambodia and other places on the globe.

The best method of observing the strong red fluorescence of ruby is to focus ultraviolet light in the absence of any visible light. The presence of iron as an impurity quenches the red fluorescence because energy is transferred to the iron and appears as heat.

In ASEAN where are rubies mined?

Another newer mining area beside Mogok in Myanmar is further southeast near the border region to Thailand, that is Mong Hsu. The minerals found there is of lower quality and are mainly heat treated already at the mine. Since their value is lower because of that the price range is also different, on the other hand, if one is not an expert without a lab this is difficult to proof, here are rough ruby stones grown on marble from Mong Hsu The main trading centers for the red stone are

Chanthaburi and Bangkok in Thailand.

In the past when the foolish neo-colonialist (Britain and US  politicians) implemented their embargo against Myanmar most gems from there were smuggled to Thailand and traded here. The Thai were happy with this solution and were smiling about the "ding dong farang" who moved the windfall profit to Thailand just because of political ideology.

Finally, everyone has known this but because of "political correctness" they didn't talk about it. At least in the media, they were the winner and the Burmese the looser and thousands of kids had less to eat because less money to buy food. At the same time, the English & US kids grow fatter at MacDonalds, isn't it a shame what these politicians are doing?

Actually, this is still one of the biggest precious stones exchange in the world because not much has changed in Myanmar anyway. Most people buying the red stones which are not only ruby stones there are other such as garnet and spinel.

Rubies from other sources (Madagascar, Sri Lanka and more

They do not contain enough iron to fluorescence, and thus their color is generally duller and lifeless compared. In ancient times it was believed that a fire burned inside a ruby, as we can guess now this was not that far from the truth.

To summarize, white light falling on a stone causes electrons to jump to a higher electric charged state. This produces the absorption of green-yellow and violet light. Thus blue and red light is transmitted, giving the stone a purplish-red hue.

Rough Ruby from Mogok before selection, a bit later they will be on the selection table. The difficult thing is to find some with high-end clarity since they always have many inclusions. That explains the treatments because when heating up the mineral most inclusions are melting away.
